SEASONAL CREEK

I started working on a series of small studies for an intended larger group, based on the reflections off the creek outside my studio window. I was looking for the right size to go to once I had solidified the basics. Then I came across a real estate listing touting a “seasonal creek” on the property. This means essentially it dries up in the summer. Somehow the realty term clarified the issue for me. Michael McClure compared gestures to a robe we wear. He wrote, “Small Gestures are like smoke, a slight breeze causes a drifting and we are bare again…uneternal.” The unmitigated seasons of the Hudson Valley impart a sense of scale. All paintings are studies, really, working with paint to come to some sort of understanding.
