BOOK OF HOURS

The inspiration for this suite of 12 paintings, particularly the palette, is the 13th Century Très Riches Heures by the three Limbourg brothers, an illustrated manuscript commissioned by the Duke of Berry. With a nod toward the tactile experience of turning the pages of a book, I chose to paint on rough jute fabric, such as is used for burlap bags. The rolled acrylic ground soaks through the open weave, and the oil, applied with playing cards, stipples over the resulting ridges, creating the characteristic drawing of the series.
